Catfish  (Wolffish, Anarhicas lupus)

Catfish

The wolf-fish is marketed as fillets (in Denmark under the attractive name " cutlet fish " ), and most consumers have never seen it with its head and skin on. Also known as the catfish, it is natural to the North Sea, Kattegat and Øresund at depths of 20-200 m. The favourite diet is mussels which it crushes with its very powerful teeth. It grows relatively slowly, and at the age of 10 it is typically 70-75 cm. Some wolf-fishes have grown to 1.5 m and 25 kg. It lives solitary on stone and gravel bottoms. Is caught as bycatch in trawls and Danish seines. Annual Danish catch in 2000: approx. 290 tons.
