Horse Mackerel ( Trachurus trachurus )

Horse Mackerel

The horse mackerel is most widespread in southern waters, but also common in the North Sea, often in large quantities. It is also caught in the very shallow waters of the Kattegat. Its fry can often be found under the large stinging jellyfish where it seeks protection and feeds on the sexual organs and tentacles of the jellyfish. When the horse mackerel grows bigger, its will mainly feed on other fish. Horse mackerels swim in large schools and are caught with pelagic trawl. Max. length: 40 cm. In Denmark it is used solely for the production of fishmeal and fish oil. Danish catches in 2000: approx. 25,000 tons.
